VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK OVERVIEW
Unmissable: mountain gorillas, volcanic landscapes, and misty forests. The dream. Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda, spans 62 square miles and is part of the larger Virunga Massif, a transboundary ecosystem of 3,000 square miles shared with Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park. Established in 1925, it is one of Africa’s oldest protected areas, renowned for its population of over 300 mountain gorillas, roughly a third of the world’s remaining population. The park also hosts golden monkeys, elephants, buffalo, and 178 bird species across its bamboo forests, montane rainforests, and five volcanic peaks, including the iconic Mount Karisimbi. Conservation efforts, inspired by Dian Fossey’s legacy, focus on gorilla protection and community-based tourism. Accommodation ranges from budget camps to luxury lodges, with the calls of gorillas and the rustle of forest leaves as a nightly serenade. The name “Volcanoes” reflects the park’s Virunga volcanoes, derived from the Kinyarwanda word “Virunga,” meaning “volcano.” A bucket-list safari destination, Volcanoes National Park offers transformative gorilla trekking experiences amid dramatic, mist-shrouded highlands.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, when trails are less muddy, and gorilla trekking is more comfortable. June to September offers clear skies and milder temperatures, though it’s peak season with higher costs and permit bookings required well in advance. December to February provides warm weather, fewer crowds, and excellent opportunities for golden monkey tracking and birdwatching. The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush vegetation and fewer tourists, but heavy rains can make trekking challenging. Visiting just after the rains offers vibrant greenery, lower costs, and a quieter experience, with the park’s volcanic vistas and gorilla encounters at their most captivating.
